Today's the anniversary of the Dresden bombing. Vonnegut thinks
the Dresden bombing was not militarily significant but "a work of art": "It was religious. It was Wagnerian. It was theatrical. It should be judged as such."
I wonder what Kurt will make of the eventual Bagdad sequel.Posted at 07:16 PM EST [Link]

Dissent is unpatriotic.
Never make eye contact.
I stopped by the supermarket today, and the shelves looked like a blizzard was on the way. Folks seem to be buying into the pre-attack hype. There was hardly any water left, so I saw some guy getting an entire cart full of cranberry juice. And for some reason the entire yogurt section was sucked dry. Apparently folks haven't thought far enough ahead that if they need fresh drinking water, there probably isn't going to be electricity to keep the yogurt fresh. Sigh. It one of those days I'm so glad I don't watch television anymore.

Infinite war forever. Get used to it.
Where the $#$&^*! would I get heavy plastic sheets even if I wanted them ?

Bigger than the nearby SUV.
(mandatory parental anti-spaz notice: I got my supply of drinking water months ago, and I've got enough bulk foods from the co-op to last about a week)

The Post takes a step closer the the root of the shuttle story:
"They kept fixing it, but they never stopped to redesign it altogether because they didn't think it was serious enough to cause a catastrophic disaster," she said in an interview. "They became desensitized to the possibility of failure."
On the other hand, maybe a redesign would just cut into profits too much.
"Right away you see the incentive structure is problematic," Kay said. It might lead the contractors to think of every upgrade or maintenance operation in terms of how it would cut into its own revenue. " 'Do you really need to pay to replace those tires again? Can't they fly just one more flight or two?' "

It turns out my homestate of Pennslyvania had a Death Fog a good three years before that Great Smog in London.
