I'm hurting for a decent byline here, as you can tell.

As a followup to the Cincinnati escaped cow, there's been an escaped goat on the lam outside my hometown for the past couple years.

Osborn and township police Cpl. Jeff Getz both said the animal was one of about 30 goats that escaped from a butcher shop in Bushkill Township about three years ago.

All but three of the goats were hunted down, and two of the survivors disappeared last year during hunting season.

"But for three years, this goat survived," Osborn said. "Now it has a death wish or something."

Check out the April 27th entry of the seitanic.pitas.com archives.

Actually there's lots of good stuff crammed on this page. It may be some time before you get down to that April 27th entry. Go make yourself some popcorn before venturing forth, so you won't go hungry. And putting a bottle of eye drops by the monitor might be wise, should you forget to blink.

Her newer stuff is here.

I hate it when a government agency screws up and the story never once mentions the government contractor who dropped the ball. For instance this recent "heads will roll" story about the recent INS screw up never once mentions which company actually had the contract for processing the paperwork.

Buried near the bottom of a previous story, we learn that ACS Inc is the contractor in question. Hmmmm, I wonder if this is the same ACS Inc that is marketing their spiffy new homeland security services. I certainly hope not.

What really kicks my pony about this is that this failure will just be used an excuse to give more cash to the same loser contractors: " This is just proof that your system needs a big honking upgrade that'll cost millions of dollars to implement. And since we're sooo familiar with your agency, and probably for all pratical purposes own all the data you've already given us, you may as well stick with us rather than move to another contractor."

Just another example of the Invisible Hand giving the public the finger.

Update: The Post latest story on thie subject has an interesting quote:

"This kind of thing happens all the time to people who aren't terrorists, but then it's not news," said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a frequent critic of the INS. "The very fact that this falls through the cracks tells you that they do not really own their own data, or have much control over what happens to it."

.

Unfortunately the article does not go into who owns the data. For instance, who wrote the program generating the form letters.

Tar Baby and Womanist Theology

"Tar has funky qualities. It is thick, black, sticky, shiny, and powerful in its ability to hold things together. It is a symbol of black women's cohesive power. There is something very earthy about tar. It has body. Tar comes from the earth and is ancient. It has an elemental quality... One might employ Morrison's 'tar baby' metaphor to represent black women as the tar women of the church, who hold churches together."

Whatever. Br'er Rabbit certainly didn't enjoy being a member of that congregation. It looks like I'm going to have to read the Toni Morrison book. The online criticism of the TB story I've been able to find don't cover what draws me to it the most - the Tar Baby's inability to respond to Br'er Rabbit.

I terrified a young child the other day.

I was waiting my turn at a blood drive when a woman came in with a boy of about four, his head stuck in a book. I felt sorry for the kid. The drive was moving along at a snail's pace, so he was doomed to spend the next hour and a half or so waiting around with nothing fun to do. I prepare myself for an annoying brat, once he got bored with his book.

But it turned out the kid was extremely well behaved, and he stays interested in whatever it was he was reading. I forgot about him. Eventually it was my turn. I turn my head so I don't have to watch the needle go in, and there's the kid again, staring straight at me now. He's finished his book and was just now noticing his surroundings. He's wondering why are all these people were sitting around with little red bags next to them, squeezing balls. Maybe he was wondering how he could get one of those balls. They looked like fun....

Then I feel the stick of the needle, and the kid's eyes bug out. He must have seen the bag begin to fill with blood and put it all together. His mouth begins to curl up. He's going to scream. He's going to scream, and this nurse is going to get startled and shove that needle right through my arm. This is not good. This is not good at all.

So I smile at him. He pauses. I do a nervous little laugh. He looks around for the woman he came in with and darts to her side. Wheh. That was a little too close for comfort.

I took the camera out for a test run to Glen Echo Park today for a test run.
It looks like it's working, though it's going to take me a while to find a decent way to incorporate pictures into the site.

This is the picture above the Bumper Car Pavilion.
I love bumper cars. I judge amusement parks solely on the quality of their bumper car rides.
Maybe one day I will find a bumper car church.
Note the guy's dressed in a suit and tie, and the woman's in a nice dress.

"Cuddle Up" is always good advice. Apparently this used to be some sort of teacup ride.

The carousel is closed until May.

Yurts ! These are hardly authentic, but I like the word. Yurt ! Yurt !

This weekend I am on a techie roll.

First I finish my CS652 programming assignment about a week sooner than I thought I would. I now have a spiffy little program showing some planets spinning around each other. It's pretty mesmerizing, though I know it's nothing more than applied matrix multiplication.

If that wasn't enough, I also managed to finally upgrade to Linux 2.4, which I insanely started at around 10:00 PM last night. I also got the USB support in place for my new digital camera, so you might be seeing some pictures here "any day now".

Of course this also shows pretty clearly that I have no life.
