I'm hurting for a decent byline here, as you can tell.

Folks might get unduly worried if I linked to this 'awful dreams' strip, so I'll link to the much more pleasant 'kicking Jesus' strip instead.

So I went on a minor geek binge yesterday and got the referal log up and running. Payoff has been pretty immediate. Yeehoo.

I actually coded myself past a dentist's appointment. I'd started on the project the night before, but run into a problem when it was pretty late, and went to bed with the script in a dreadful, unstable state. I assume that is something like married people going to bed after a fight and not making up first. It's not good for the soul. I didn't sleep well, and I got up early and started fix it, even before I had showered. I kept telling myself I'd get ready right after I it was working, but even after the main problem was fixed there was still the tweaking, and then suddenly it was way too late to ever get to the dentist, and since they weren't expecting me in the office for a couple hours, I just hacked the morning away. Very nice.

My dad works with the father of this murdered GWU student. I got a frantic call from my parents on Sunday night telling me about it.
They tried to convince me I shouldn't leave my apartment to go hiking or jogging, since they had heard it had happened in a local park.
In retrospect, it was probably not the best time to tell them about the 'your building may be blown up' FBI warning.

I got my ISSN number today. It's 1540-0670.
It took them about four and a half months to process the request.

I don't give a toot about Anita Roddick getting whacked by Google.
Christophe Bruno has a much more interesting case, worthy of further examination.

It's sad but this article about 'long-distance' relationships in the Washington area is pretty true. My favorite quote:

"I met a woman in Baltimore, and she was really nice, but I thought: Baltimore is so far away, I can't imagine making this drive."

Yes, the drive out to Baltimore sucked big time on a Friday night. And when I say 'suck', I mean as with an industrial shop vac, not a ditzy dustbuster.

Worst part is my soul-mate, if there is such a thing is probably living in Greenbelt or Tacoma Park which is way outside the distance I'm willing to travel anymore. If only Cisco would relocate over to Maryland....

I got a letter from the bishop of Arlington !

I haven't been in a Catholic church in Virginia for around four years now, much to my mother's chagrin, but the diocese keeps sending me stuff anyway. Most of it I throw into the garbage without opening it. Well, this year the bishop's lenten appeal came around at about the the same time all those stories about big payoffs to victims were being reported .

So I sent back to appeal form, but instead of checking the $10, or $20 or $50 checkboxes, I checked the 'other' box, put in a $0.00, and added a note in the margin saying I didn't trust them to put my money would be put to good use, and would they please remove my name from their mailing lists. I didn't mention anything about the payoffs or scandal. I didn't expect to hear anything back, thinking they would notice I never gave anything in the past so they weren't actually losing any money. But alas, I got a response anyway....

The bishop is verbose, so I'll summarize: Got your note, the scandal's a shame. It's understandable you choose not to support the appeal this year. There are a lot more good clergy than bad, and they've been doing good stuff for a long time. Your donations make the good stuff possible. Each diocese operates separately. The diocese financials are not tied to any other dioceses financials. No lenten appeal money has gone to payoffs. The diocese has a misconduct policy in place since 1991. No dangerous priests serve in the diocese. The bishop does not assign pedophiles to any form of ministry. Please pray for the diocese.

Now take that, Catholicize it ( s/good stuff/Christ's power to use the Church as the primary instrument of grace in the world/g etc) and you have a page and a half letter. A copy of the bishops second pedophilia letter was also included. The bulk of the letter was what kept me from throwing it away int he first place.

It was pretty obviously a form letter, so despite what the Post is reporting, it appears that enough good people of Arlington did sometihng similar that the diocese is responding. Hat's off to you, my neighbors !

I suggest anyone getting Catholic junk mail give a similar $0.00 donation. Then, perhaps next time they need some hush money, they resort to taking up a second collection. Or maybe having a bake sale.

Update: Arlington priest accused of breaking up a marriage of 18 years.

World Cup Soccer ? Blah. Where are the three-sided football matches. I guess I'll just have to make due with the color commentary.
