Mini-blowtorches - a danger in the wrong hands

Good golly, lock up the young ones, godless linguistics is on the prowl.
Third, there is NO evidence that transitional languages ever existed. What use is half a language? A noun without verbs conveys no meaning! Sure, there is middle and old- English. But these are ENGLISH! A complete nontransitional language. We do not deny that micro-linguistics can happen, but this process can create only DIALECTS. There is NO EVIDENCE that a series of random micro-linguistic events can create a WHOLE NEW LANGUAGE. I'll believe in Macro-linguistics when I see a video tape of a child growing up in an Eskimo village suddenly become fluent in Armenian! It takes A LOT MORE FAITH to believe in atheistic linguisticism than the truth of Babelism.
Best if read in the style of the Dead Milkman's "Stuart", especially that Eskimo village line.

Dear Rentokil,
I found myself driving next to one of your vans this evening. Please consider a name change. Seeing "rent-to-kill" vans on the roads nowadays is pretty startling, to say the least. It must be a pretty catchy name for your security and pest control divisions though. Perhaps you could cash in on your valuable toilet R&D and change your name to "Runtokrap".
Sincerely,P.S. Thanks for Henrico County, you bastards.

Dennis J Kucinich from the 10th district in Ohio has proposed a Department of Peace.
(10) We are in a new millennium, and the time has come to review age-old challenges with new thinking wherein we can conceive of peace as not simply being the absence of violence, but the active presence of the capacity for a higher evolution of the human awareness, of respect, trust, and integrity; wherein we all may tap the infinite capabilities of humanity to transform consciousness and conditions which impel or compel violence at a personal, group, or national level toward developing a new understanding of, and a commitment to, compassion and love, in order to create a `shining city on a hill', the light of which is the light of nations.
Hot damn. Is this really in the congressional record... yeh it's in Thomas..... hey, hey what's that ? Is my foot asleep again. No. This is what hope feels like.

The Washington Post had a "byline strike" last Wednesday. I have to admit, I didn't notice at all. After all, the Post is corporate media, so their employees are about as interchangable as sparkplugs. I missed the bylines about as much as I would have missed the nametags on the counterkids at McDonald's. Which I guess in some strange, twisted way underscores the need for collective bargining.
Now what the Guild should have done is reach out to the blogging community and asked us not to link to their paper for the duration of the strike. Supporters could write their posts as normal, but instead of linking to the paper's story, they could link to some "byline strike" page somewhere for the duration of the strike. Then when the action was over, people could go update their entries to point at the expected link within the paper. It wouldn't take very many supporters to get a sizeable exposure on sites like daypop.

The Jewish Defense Group is starting a vigilante posse in New York.
Note, there seems to be some confusion over the JDL, which was accused of trying to bomb Rep. Darrell Issa and the JDG, which I never heard of before today.

Preparations have started for the Silk Road festival. It's still two weeks away, and it's already taking up more than half the Mall. It's going to be immense. It looks like there's also going to be events scheduled for the evenings, which will be nice for the townies.
