The only surprising aspect of the Taliban's decision to ban the Internet is that they hadn't already done it. They banned television over five years ago. Actually, I'm pretty surprised that anyone in Afghanistan actually has Internet access.

This story about massive management layoffs at Lucent is from The Register, so take with a salt pill or two, especially the dire predictions of workplace violence.

I saw AI recently. I knew it was going to be bad, but I really wasn't prepared for how really gut-wrechingly terrible it really was. Just when you think the stupid robot can't whine any more, he goes on and on and whines for two thousand more years. Even boring Latin American epic novels only subject you to one hundred years of pain. Ughh. The only character I liked was the stuffed animal. This isn't even worth a rental.

Here's an interesting story about Cisco and UNIFEM that requires more input on my part.
First impression is it's good to work for a company doing stuff like this, but on the other hand, is it really an altruistic move, or is it just a form of dumping obsolete technology on developing countries... More on this tonight when I have a chance to look into it more.

Today's an international day of action against ExxonMobile. Looks like I missed the Earth to ExxonMobil Day of Action last March, which is a shame, because they picked a much better date.

I get a fair number of "internet petitions" which I normally ignore because I doubt their effectiveness. I poked around a little this morning, looking for some justification for my dount, and wa-la, I found some excellent resources from Phil Agre who runs the Red Rock News Service that I have a permanent link to off to the right.
The first article is called Designing Effective Action Alerts for the Internet and the second is Against Chain Letter Petitions on the Internet.
It also looks like there's lots of other goodies on Agre's Homepage. Enjoy.

Much as I hate linking to the proprietary Acrobate format, this flier on ten ways to keep books you love in print is special enough for an exception.

Cisco's released a press release about the project I've been on for the past six months or so.
Dispite sounding so incrediably boring that you probably shouldn't drive or operate other heavy machinery for a couple hours after reading the press release, it's been one of the most satisfying projects I've been on ever. It makes a huge difference when you put in a lot of work and actually see it put to use. I can't imagine going back to a government contracting.

Well, I went to services at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington today. A majority of the service consisted of reports from delegates who had been to the 40th General Assembly meeting in Cleveland. I figure any religion where protesting the Cleveland Indian mascot plays a major role in their yearly meeting probably deserves a closer look.
Local area sports fans should notice this passage in the previous link:
As for the red skin, no Native Americans have red skin.
