The pwan's weblog without a name

I'm hurting for a decent byline here, as you can tell.

I got sick of the annoying yellow background, so now it's "old lace" and "wheat". I also switched to a sans serif font and cut back the border thickness a bit. Also I implemented a hack so the pathetic Netscape 4.0 souls can read the site without the div's overlapping each other. The archived pages also now validate correctly - the comment form code was all out of whack.

I've also implemented some of Mark Pilgram's excellent accessiblity suggestions. Mr Pilgram's done more for accessibility and site design in the past month than anyone else I can think of in the past couple years.

Turns out due to my low road design most of the site was already pretty accessable. Pretty spiffy, eh ? For the first time, I'm almost happy with the the layout. Good for me. OK, I'll stop patting myself on the back now.

I am smitten by almost every paragraph Bathsheba writes, but codemaker & heartbreaker is perhaps my favorite.

I don't know how those Diaryland people do it. Their posts are all so amazingly long, day after day after day.

The showing of "The Next Industrial Revolution" was last night. As expected it turned out to be pretty much just greenwash for the likes of Nike, Ford, and Herman Miller. One phrase was overused so much people started groaning half-way through the presentation. Instead of baby blankets, MBDC should sell jack-in-the-boxes, where McDonough's head pops out and says "Waste Equals Food !!!! Waste Equals Food !!!! Hahahahaah".

A much better example of a green architect might be Sim Van Der Ryn. Instead of Ford factories, he designs Buddhist mediatation halls.

Check out his reading list - it's got a bunch of the usual suspects: Jane Jacobs, Christopher Alexander, Wendell Berry, E.F. Schumacher, plus a lot of other interesting sounding titles.

I suppose if any transreal physists ever decode the radio waves from the oldest quasars they'll probably find them to be flames about the early history of time, and messages about what a sad, sorry mess the whole universe thing had expanded into.

On a completely unrelated note, I had a really good time on Monday hanging out with Greg and Jessamyn at the Library of Congress. The Jefferson Building has a lot of excellent artwork on the ceilings, full of quotes and what not. I now have a Reader Identification Card, and have even had my bags searched by the Library Police numerous times.

As for capitulation, I'm considering transfering some of the funds from the market to City First Bank, the only community development bank in the DC area.

Better my money be put to work revitializing the local economy than some rogue's mansion in Florida.

By the way, does the Post still have editors ? Egads.

The days when professional day traders and other arm-chair stock-pickers tuned in to get the latest buzz from honey-tongued analysts and chief executives preaching the Gospel of the New Economy appear to be coming to end.

In another crappy movie plot twist, people are getting hit with blow darts in the District.

Police department spokesman Sergeant Joe Gentile says the use of a blowgun hasn't been confirmed. He says it might also have been some sort of nail dispenser.

Oh just great. I feel so much better now.

Update: More on the serial dartist. Nineteen victums so far. The darts are 4 inches long - they penetrate a quarter inch. Ouch !!
