I'm guessing about 10% of my visitors will find the Lambda the Ultimate isn't about what they thought it might be about. Sorry, no rainbow flags today, just a bunch of Turing machine tapes flapping in the wind.
Welcome to anyone who's stumbled in from randomWalks.

I'm reading Pilgram At Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard now.
The first paragraph of chapter two of this book is amazing. It just blew me away.
Since I couldn't find it anywhere online, I'm entering it here:
When I was six or seven years old, growing up in Pittsburgh, I used to take a precious penny of my own and hide it for someone else to find. It was a curious compulsion; sadly, I've never been seized by it since. For some reason I always "hid" the penny along the same stretch of sidewalk up the street. I would cradle it at the roots of a sycamore, say, or in a hole left by a chipped-off piece of sidewalk. Then I would take a piece of chalk, and starting at either end of the block, draw huge arrows leading up to the penny from both directions. After I learned how to write I labeled the arrows: SURPRISE AHEAD or MONEY THIS WAY. I was greatly excited, during all this arrow-drawing, at the thought of the first passer-by who would receive in this way, regardless of merit, a free gift from the universe. But I never lurked about. I would go straight home and not give the matter another thought, until, some months later, I would be gribbed again by the impulse to hide another penny.

I like the idea of a death penalty for corporate crimes. Doesn't seem fair that you should be able to kill 21 people and only get fined.

Wow, when you've got to sell your private golf course, you know times are tough.

Though my motive my be called into question, I still thought this Nielsen article on avoiding PDF for on-screen reading was interesting.
BTW, There's been some cleanup work done on this site: I filled in some missing Greymatter templates, and fixed some HTML errors in the existing ones so the W3C validator is happy.
I've also setup a very basic stylesheet, and tried to get all the dates to use the long now format.
The next big step is to weed out the bad links I know I have all over the place.
It looks like Link Valet will be useful for this.
