The pwan's weblog without a name

I'm hurting for a decent byline here, as you can tell.

AIGA has an collection of commemorative images at their site.
Most are corny, and predicatable, but some like the Jeanne Verdoux and Patrick Flynn pieces are downright harsh.

A painful project at work is ended, so the song for today is Ludwig's "Ode To Joy".
I assume somethings been lost in the translation from German:

She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!

I'm in the process of porting my registar from Network Solutions to Gandi.net, so if the site disappears for a while, that will be the cause.

I've updated the quote I hide in the notes section of the vcard attachment that goes out with all my work mail.

Out: "Once weapons exist, targets have to be found" - Howard Zinn

In: "People keep saying that the world has changed completely since September 11th, but when I checked the Constitution it hadn't changed at all." - Phil Agre

Perhaps I will change it something like "Once targets exists, weapons will be developed" when someone becomes witty enough to use it in an essay somewhere.

Let's hope the people rebuilding downtown Manahattan read up on their Jane Jacobs.
Maybe they can give us back a real downtown instead of just erecting another enormous target.

Today is the birthday of Mahatma Ghandi.
An altogether bad day to start a military offensive, I would hope.

I received some outrageious spam that after 15 seconds of searching turned out to be a variation on the Nigerian Advance Fee Scheme.

Victims are almost always requested to travel to Nigeria or a border country to complete a transaction. Individuals are often told that a visa will not be necessary to enter the country. The Nigerian con artists may then bribe airport officials to pass the victims through Immigration and Customs. Because it is a serious offense in Nigeria to enter without a valid visa, the victim's illegal entry may be used by the fraudsters as leverage to coerce the victims into releasing funds. Violence and threats of physical harm may be employed to further pressure victims. In June of 1995, an American was murdered in Lagos, Nigeria, while pursuing a 4-1-9 scam, and numerous other foreign nationals have been reported as missing.
I am amazed anyone would be stupid enough to fall for this, especially based on an unsolicated e-mail, but apparently it happens enough for the Secret Service to have a dedicated operation for it. Of course, they also had to add the question "Can you send me a sample bullet ? on their Kiddie FAQ page. Egads !
