The pwan's weblog without a name

I'm hurting for a decent byline here, as you can tell.

My transfer to Gandi has finally gone through.
Hurray ! Still I had to shell out an extra $25.00 to NetSol since, mysteriously, the e-mail update problem that was holding up the Gandi transfer didn't get resolved until a day or two after the domain name would have expired. Hmmm. Hmmmmmm.

I'm on a Kim Stanley Robinson kick now. The Gold Coast was excellent.

My 24 hour cynicism flu is over, mainly because I've found something that's making me hop up and down in my seat:
subscription organic vegetables in my area. This looks like it'll be really interesting.
Thank you randomwalks.

Happy All Souls Day otherwise known as the Day of the Dead.
Go make an altar.

Of course there's the to-be-expected 9-11 take on the holiday :

"Mexico has always accepted death with a quiet resilience."

The inner-cynic theme continues with the Kristin Hersh song flipside:

holy shit i think i'ld rather be on the ground than flying

It's taken way out of context, but that line still sticks out like a sore thumb now.

The inner-cynic quote of the day:

"When I saw the dead and dying Afghani children on TV, I felt a newly recovered sense of national security. God Bless America." - Katie Sierra.

Update: When I hear about high school students getting spat upon and otherwise harassed I feel a newly recovered sense of national security. God Bless America.

The inner-cynic rules today: A fundie hell house exploits the September 11th attacks. Vultures.

My inner-cynic now knows why they were called it a "recovery effort".

Update: Hmmm. Now that the gold's gone, suddenly so are the firefighters as well.
Does the inner-cynic find this surprising ?

Anybody else find themselves reading the small print of their insurance policies a little closer lately ?

HR,
I'm sure you've gotten this question 100 times by now, but I'll ask anyway.
The AD&D policy says that benefits aren't paid out in the event of an act or war either declared or undeclared.
How are acts of terrorism covered ?
Are they classified as undeclared acts of war ?
I'm guessing this is the case, but it would be good to have some official verbage to this effect.
Thanks,
- jude

Update: Seems like I've hit a nerve. I've gotten calls from two people in human resources so far, both saying they're looking into the issue, and they should know sometime next week. Turns out I was the first person to ask about it. I guess the folks near the District are a tad bit more sensitive about such thanks than the folks in California.

Update 2: Acts of terrorism != Undeclared Acts of War !! Incidenents will be examined on a case-by-case basis. Plus, HR was able to reduce the rates by 14% this year, so it may be a good idea for you to participate. Well, figuring all this was only going to cost me an extra $10.00 a year, I figure I'll go for it.

Shame on you Jo Moore.
Cheers to whoever came up with that great headline: Terror e-mail mole hunt launched
I just wanted to find out what the "terror e-mail mole" was and how they planned to catch it.

I wonder what dinner at the Chomsky's would be like if Nader was a guest.

"We were at a dinner party and he was sitting at the table imitating whale sounds."

More notes from the Twin Oaks trip: I packaged tempeh and was attacked by two calves less than a month old. I collected some chicken eggs. I danced with a dog. The people on the whole seemed a lot more normal than my first visit down. Dinner was excellent, spinach salad with spinach miso dressing with a side of spinach and oh yeh some sweet pototas and apple pie. Debby and I had a very good long conversation. All is well in that part of the universe.

Anyway, I ended up deciding not to stay the night, mainly because I'd have to spend the night in the infirmary in a different building than Debby, where I didn't know anyone, and another because of some unneccessary firefighting activity at work - an issue I found Friday afternoon and which no one cared about at the time became a hot-hot-hot issue pretty much as soon as I passed Fredricksburg on Satuday morning. They still hadn't fixed it by 6:30 Saturday night, so I drove back and fixed it early Sunday morning, sending out a few nastigrams as well ("If you'd read this e-mail, and maybe this status report, I wouldn't have had to cut my trip short..."). I was planning on fixing it Saturday night, but I got lost driving back somewhere between Mineral and 95. All those roads in rural Virginia look the same at night. I didn't get home until 1:30AM.
