06/24/2003 Entry: "Flexible Fuel Shenanigans Ford Taurus"

I did a doubletake yesterday when I saw a Ford Taurus with Virginia alternate fuel tags. It turns out that :

All [Taures] are flexible-fuel vehicles, so if you are eco-conscious and live near a gas station that offers E85 ethanol-based fuel, you [can] put either type of fuel into the tank at any time and feel no difference in performance.

Seeing that the car could be driven for thousands of miles without ever tasting a single sweet drop of ethanol, it seems plain wrong they should get alternative fuel plates. Sure, the gas-using hybrids get to the alternative fuel plates, but at least the battery's pumping out it's gas-saving goodness all the time. Not just when it's convenient for the driver.

Bah on Taurus owners, and hot buttered bahs on Ford.
