The pwan's weblog without a name

I'm hurting for a decent byline here, as you can tell.

I've finally scrounging together enough money for a down payment and closing costs on a small condo, but this Washington Post article on the crazy local market knocked all the steam out of my little engine.

"Every time we find something we think we might like, it's off the market by the time we get there," he said. "We went to an open house last Sunday. It was from 1 to 4 and we showed up at 2. They already had seven contracts, six in hand, and one being written in the basement when we walked in."

It was getting like this a couple years ago the last time I was looking, but it sounds just totally out of control. I'm just going to stick it out as a renter for another few years until this market collapses. Eventually the jobs will move elsewhere (offshore probably) once no one can afford to live here anymore. Maybe I should look into moving out to Reston so I don't have to drive as much to work. Sigh. Maybe it's time to move back up North.

In a welcome change from the Channel Unification of education, there's a credit union just for kids in a local Alexandria grade school :

"When do I get my next statement?" asked Tiana Barlow, 9, a fourth-grader, when she deposited $15 in her newly opened account.

The 10-year-old teller, fourth-grader Shakia Taylor, told her she would get monthly account statements.

There's a new Prius-centric blog. A recent post quotes some hometown car dealerships.

"We've seen a lot of people trade in SUVs for the Civic hybrid," Jones says. "A lot of those people have been New York City commuters."

Easton's a good 100 miles from New York and it's becoming a sprawlified NYC suburb at this very moment as I sit here typing.
