There were a couple hours on the 3rd when I experienced some home buyers remorse for the first time. I wanted to pack it all in and go back up North again, but now I had the house and I was stuck here forever. I was wondering how long I'd have to stay before prices went up enough that I could at least recoup the closing costs.
I calmed down pretty quickly though, especially reading about how devastated a lot of the folks over on the sidebar seemed to be. I think some of that's because it was pretty clear Virginia wasn't going to go for Kerry anyway so my vote was already pretty useless.
Best to remember Nixon won his second term by a landslide.

I walked across the street to the elementary school, and stood in the extremely long A-M line for about 5 minutes. A poll worker came out and asked the L-Z people to follow him to a much short line, and I had my sticker in less than 20 minutes. There were probably over 150 people in the A-M line but only 5 in the L-Z line. Pretty bizarre.
Afterwards, I stopped by a coffee shop, since I hadn't gotten up early enough that I could go back to bed, but not late enough that I had to run off to work. They only charged me for a small coffee instead of a large since I wearing my "I voted" sticker ! So far, it's been a pretty good day.

Don't get caught by surprise my the nonpresidental questions on the ballot tomorrow.
There are some constitutional amendments and some bind issues on the ballot tomorrow in Fairfax.
Check them out now so you don't slow everyone down tomorrow reading the legal text in the voting booth.
The pwan central editoral board gives a lackluster endorsement to Kerry and Moran, and a yes to all the amendments and bond issues. My plan tomorrow is to get up really early and vote, then go back to sleep for a few hours and then ignore the election for the rest of the week.

Hmm, somehow I missed the First Month anniversary of the house. Oh well. Nothing that exciting has been happening. One night it rained pretty hard, and I thought there were squirrels in the attic, but it turned out to just be the drops from the oak tree above the house hitting the roof at irregular intervals. I know this because I went up in the attic at 2:00AM with a flashlight to check things out. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, so I turned off the lights and sat up there for a few minutes the intent of turning it on again once the noises started again, catching the little critter in the act. After a few minutes I figured out it was just the rain. Looking back, I have no clue what I would have done had I actually seen a squirrel. Most likely I would have broken my legs running out of the attic.
After an embarrassingly long time I have a little home network up and running such that the linux box and my laptop from work are both sharing the same cable signal. I haven't synced up the linux box since before I started packing, around two months ago, so I've sort of been dreading getting things up to date again. It's currently emerging 77 packages, including stuff like gcc, xfree, and mozilla, so basically the machne will be doing nothing except compiling source for the next three days or so.
It's a great day out so I'm going to go take some pictures. Now that I don't have to deal with dial-up, I should have less excuses for not posting them quickly.
Tonight's Trick-Or-Treat, so I have some candy, but I suspect I overdid it some. The folks at work may be getting some treats tomorrow...
Update: All my candy was gone by 7:45. I had my light on since 6:00, and wasn't getting many kids, but then there was a huge rush between 7:30 and 8:00. The last few minutes I was just holdng the door open and kids were grabbing handfuls of candy out my bowl until it was empty. Some of the kids only took on or two pieces, but lots were greedy little beasts.
