Boxcutters have been added as a tool, dispite there use in the September 11th attacks.
I'll be damned if I'm going to let a bunch of terrorists dictate what I can use as a tool.
Also, removing packaging has been updated.

The method Honoring Boycotts was added today, along with a spiffed up Buying for Unbranding page. This new DIV based template is much easier to use than the old table based on - I can't wait until I have the whole site converted over !

I'm back after a bit of a break. I've added some verbage for the regifting method, and revamped the methods template.
Over the next couple weeks I hope to move all the unbranding pages out of transitional HTML 4.0 to strict XHTML. All that techie-speak means is that the five or so readers I have should go update their browsers to something capable of rendering cascading style sheets well.
I suggest upgrading to the latest open source Mozilla release. I recently tried upgrading to the latest Netscape, and found it a horrible branded hell. After an hour or so of getting rid of all the obvious ads (default bookmarks, sidebars, homepage, etc), I couldn't find a way to get rid of a very offensive "SHOP" button on toolbar. I'm shuddering just remembering the experience.

I've been checking out the reference logs for the site, and it looks like a couple people have been linking to these pages. Cool ! It even looks like not everyone agrees with me, which means I must be doing something right.
I haven't been maintaining these pages very well, but now that I know I have a reader or two, perhaps that will increase my incentive. If you have any ideas of your own for cutting down on the advertising clutter in your life, please drop me a line.
I've cleaned up a lot of the invalid links in these pages, and then I went ahead and added a bunch more as a result of adding the discarding method. I can't wait to test out the thearaputic sledgehammering method...

I've been checking out the logs for this site, and it looks like some agribusiness people may be stumbling across this site looking for information about a particular form of cattle mutilation. Sorry, that's not what site is about. Perhaps the main image on this article will be to your liking...
Oh yeh, Happy Fourth of July everyone.

Long time no see ! I actually fleshed out the Removing packaging method from the last post, and added a Toolbox tool.
I've also acquired some duct tape, and it's some fun stuff ! I currently have it bundled in with Electrical tape in the tool index, but it's really versatile enough to be a tool on it's own. One of the uses I probably won't go into on the tool page will be "covering up annoying blinking smoke detector lights in hotel rooms" which I found out last week during my visit to Ithaca ! I forgot to remove the tape after I checked out. Oh my !
Another possibile tool I hope to enter soon is "Correction fluid" otherwise known by the brand name "Liquid paper" or "Wite out". My experiences so far with these has not been good, so until I find a good use for them, I won't be including them in the index. I love the name of the product though - I am certainly trying to use it to correct some product design flaws !
My first product fatality as a result of unbranding happened recently - I figured I would remove the logo from a CD I was listening to, figuring I could stratch off the log on the top side without effecting the music stored on the other side of the CD. Well, that didn't work too well - CD's turn out to be a lot thinner than I though they were. My advice would be to stick to covering logos on CD's with ink rather than trying to remove the logo altogether.

Jessamyn recenty sent me a note suggesting I check out her medicine cabinet.
Whew, for a while there, I thought I was the only person getting bothered by this branding crap ...
Well, anyway, I checked out my own medicine cabinet and it looked nowhere so sweet, so cleaning it up led to some pretty good ideas. Among them, the use of sandwich baggies as alternative packaging, and the use of rubber bands when removing packaging. I've gotta get myself a digital camera so I can start posting some before & after photos.

The tool electrical tape has been added to the catalog.
I'm finding that as I add entries I can add more and more links to entries that have already been added. The problem is that these links should be two-way, but in general I'm not going back and updating the older entries I'm referencing in the newer entries. For instance, I should really go back and update the adhesive stickers entry entry to suggest using electrical tape if the product background is black.
Oh well. I'll get around to it eventually. There's only so much I can do with one hour a day before going to work !.

The Repackaging products method has been added.
I also noticed something terrible happened to the templates over the last couple days, especially on the Microsoft browser, so I tried fixing that up a little. Keeping these pages somewhat consistent is proving to be very painful...
